Flow for iLight Marina Bay Festival 2012
Flow is a response to the iLight Marina Bay Festival brief seeking artists to convey the themes of celebrating Asian culture, interactivity and sustainability.
On a technical level Flow was originally conceived to be powered by the same technology as vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT). However, due to insufficient speed and catchment of wind in Marina Bay, the effect is mimicked instead.
Flow consists of a series of illuminated recycled plastic water drums . The drums are connected to built-in LEDs and activated through motion sensors. The installation invites the interactivity of the public who are rewarded with the experience of ‘converting kinetic energy into light’. The gesture resembles the contemplative ritual of turning prayer wheels: an act of accumulating wisdom and goodness in parallel with our desires of environmental merit and purity.
Flow is festival commission.
